New Hunter tourism chair

Tuesday, 8 January 20083 min read

The Hunter’s key tourism body, Hunter Regional Tourism Organisation, has welcomed the appointment of Peter Harman as its new chairman, with Harman taking over from David Mulham who had chaired the organisation for the past five years.

Hunter Tourism says that Harman brings to the role a wealth of experience and knowledge of the tourism industry, having been in the tourism industry – accommodation and hotels, for 15 years, primarily in a senior capacity.

In 2004-05 Mr. Harman chaired the Regional Southern Highlands Tourism Group which is a Government funded local advisory group for the tourism and hospitality industries that reviews training and development opportunities.

Currently owning and operating two businesses in the Hunter Valley – Peppers Guest House and Peppers Convent in Pokolbin – joining after the management buyout and privatisation of the two properties in 2005; Harman recognises the great opportunity to learn and contribute to the region’s tourism industry whilst chairing the organisation.

“I have observed the momentum of the organisation over the last few years and have seen the cooperation between the local tourism industries and Tourism NSW and found it to be an exciting opportunity with enormous potential for the whole region’, Mr Harman said.

“There have been encouraging trends with the visitation numbers steadily increasing.” “The previous chair David Mulham and board members have achieved great positioning of the region as a tourism destination and I look forward to keeping the momentum going”, he added.

Hunter Tourism’s key priorities for 2008 are to maintain the marketing momentum established in 2007; secure NSW Government support for the development of a five year tourism plan for the Hunter Region; and planning development to implement ‘Project Green’ and effectively establish the Hunter Region as a carbon neutral destination.
