New Malaysian airline start up Bayu Air has admitted it has not yet applied for a permit to fly despite announcing with great fanfare last week its intention to commence services in August.
Department of Civil Aviation director general Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman criticised the company for jumping the gun, confirming no application had yet been received.
"A new airline wanting to operate scheduled flights or unscheduled flights must first apply for permits and licences from the Ministry of Transport and the DCA before making any announcement," Abdul Rahman said.
Bayu Air CEO Mohd Saifulrizal Raffien said it is still finalising documentation and will send its application to the DCA soon.
"The pre-launch and media conference held on February 16 was merely to inform tour agencies that Bayu Air was set up to facilitate the tour agencies in terms of group travelling for the performance of ‘Umrah’ and tourism," he said in a statement.
"Bayu Air had never stated that we have already had the permit or flying licence although we have plans to operate fully in August 2016. The plan also depended on the speed of approval for Bayu Air’s flying permit and licence," he said, while apologising for the confusion caused.
