New San Diego convention hotel has a niche
Architects say the recent groundbreaking on the 1,190-room Hilton San Diego is creating a resort atmosphere in the center of a major city.
The 30-story hotel is one of the largest to begin construction in 2006.
It is located in the heart of San Diego adjacent to the convention center and across from Petco Park. Amenities will include upscale retail shops and restaurants and a waterfront restaurant, said its architect, John Portman & Associates.
Meeting areas will offer views of the bay, the city’s skyline and the historic Gaslight Quarter.
“From the very beginning of the design process, our goal was to create a hotel that would become a true urban resort, taking full advantage of the outstanding views,” said Walt miller, vice president for the Atlanta-based John Portman & Associates.
The site will also feature a new 4.3-acre landscaped public park.
