New travel curbs come into effect at Canada border crossings

Friday, 16 Feb, 2021 0

Canada’s tough new travel restrictions at land borders are now in effect, requiring Covid-19 negative tests for all travelers.

It follows stricter protocols already imposed at airports for inbound arrivals.

It applies to all 117 land border crossing points on the US-Canada border.

"I would like to request all people who would consider nonessential travel: Now is not the time. Cancel your vacation plans," Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair said.

"Our shared priority must be to keep each other safe."

Proof of a negative Covid-19 PCR test taken in the last 72 hours is now required and applies to all nonessential travelers.

Travelers may be fined without one.

Travelers have previously been able to avoid testing by using land border crossings.

A 14-day quarantine is still required for all inbound travelers.

From 22 February, air travelers will be required to undergo mandatory three-day hotel quarantine at their own expense.

They will also be subject to multiple Covid tests.

"These border measures will help stop the spread of COVID-19 and new variants," Blair said.
