The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reported a record-breaking year for passenger numbers in 2013.
The four airports under the jurisdiction of the Port Authority — JFK, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty and Newburgh/Stewart — welcomed a combined 111.6 million air travelers during 2013.
This beats the previous record set in 2007 by over 1.5 million.
Port authority deputy executive director Deborah Gramiccioni said the numbers are a direct result of capital investment made to upgrade airside facilities to ease congestion.
These include relaying runways and high-speed taxiways as well as terminal refurbishment.
Individually, JFK set a new airport record with a total of 50 million passengers during 2013, which included an all-time high of 26 million from overseas, while LaGuardia Airport also beat its previous best for international travelers with an estimated 1.6 million.
In mid-2013 the Port Authority assumed management of Atlantic City Airport but has yet to release its figures.
