New Zealand stops to remember earthquake victims

Friday, 01 Mar, 2011 0

Rescue workers in quake-torn Christchurch joined the country in standing in silence for two minutes as a mark of respect today.

Christchurch has been hit by more than 200 aftershocks – with the latest measuring 4.3 in magnitude.

The official quake death toll has reached 154, and police admitted it was likely to hit “around 240”.

About 50,000 people have flown out of Christchurch since Tuesday’s earthquake, Air NZ says.

That figure is expected to rise to 70,000 by the end of the week, as locals take time out and visitors leave the city.

Air NZ has provided cheap fares to local residents seeking respite.
