Norderney, a national park spa island
Thalasso therapy and festivals – health and fun in German Top100 Sustainable destination
Germany’s Thalasso Island Norderney is one of the seven East Frisian islands on the North Sea coast, in the middle of the Lower Saxony ‘Wattenmeer’ National Park. It is said that the island holds values beyond price. Whoever comes feels the pulse of the tides, feels the elements, and becomes part of the natural world.
Thalasso therapy is as old as the sea – is which uses smells and sounds, surf, water, salt, minerals, vitamins, sand and silt. On the beach you will immediately feel the healing powers of the sea. Five of the 10 designated thalasso trails of the island include the beach. Five shorter walks lead through the city, along the promenade and the sights. The starting point of these five paths is Norderney’s bath house, the home of thalasso.
Norderney considers itself to be Europe’s number one Thalasso-island. Thalasso brings health from the sea and this is what you get everywhere in the island – no matter if you walk at the beach, sit in a beach-basket or just breathe in and out.
If you want to experience more Thalasso health, the best way is to visit the Badhaus Norderney, the biggest Thalasso-house in Europe with about 8,000 square metres of health! Here you get to know water in all its variations, from very cold to steam, including massages and Thalasso-treatments with original Norderney mud. A very exclusive and sustainable mud harvested beside the iisland..
The power of the sea is embodied even in the construction of Norderney’s Bath House. Here, a hundred shades of blue, mystical iridescence, golden amber, and solid granite, reflects the essence of Norderney and its elements.
The thalassotherapy at Bath House is based on three main constituent parts. The first is the element of seawater in all its diversity – from refreshing to hot, from gently dripping to billowing and rushing, as a waterfall, trickle, mist or salt bath with optimum salt as in the Dead Sea. The second level celebrates the element of fire – with saunas and steam baths, a roof sauna, a wash bath with hot stones as well as seawater irrigation. The third involves cleansing, sleep and rest, through warmth and an inviting lounge area with an open fire.
Guests can also book individual treatments such as massages, seawater baths, silt packs in hammocks and cosmetics complement and try Aquafitness and Aquajogging.
Meanwhile, the Family Thalassobad, which opened in 2012, is child-friendly concept that goes far beyond the classic splashing and bathing experience with its warm, sea water surfing pool.

And Norderney is an island of festivals too:
In 2019 they celebrate the island’s 22nd White Sands Festival which is a combination of volleyball-contests, a kite-surf-cup and surfer-partys. This festival is always at the Whitsun-weekend.
In June you can enjoy the International movie-festival. It has a great tradition, a lot of important friends in the movie-business and is a very familiar event. A special recommendation is the short-movie-night at the historic cure-theatre of Norderney.
At the end of July, visitors enjoy a music-festival at the north-beach called "Summertime@NORDERNEY". Every year top music acts play live in front of 2.500 people and the sun setting in the north-sea. This is probably the most emotional festival at the german north-sea and always worth it.
In recent years performers have included Anastacia, Simple Minds, Santiano, Unheilig and many more, in 2019 there will be Milow (from Belgium), Michael Patrick Kelly (from Ireland) and Mac Giesinger (Germany). That’s definitely a "must-see", when you are here.
Natural health and fabulous fun – what could be a better combination?
