Now Myanmar is hit by earthquake
More than 25 people have been killed and dozens of buildings destroyed after a strong earthquake struck Myanmar near the Thai border.
Tremors spread as far away as Bangkok, almost 800km from the epicentre, Hanoi and parts of China during the earthquake on Thursday, which the US Geological Survey (USGS) measured at magnitude 6.8.
A Myanmar official warned that there could be ‘many more casualties’ in the town of Tarlay, close to the epicenter.
Across the border in Thailand, police in Mae Sai district said a 52-year-old woman was killed after a wall of her house collapsed.
The quake struck 90km north of Chiang Rai and 235km northeast of Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second city and a popular tourist destination. Tall buildings shuddered in Bangkok during the tremor.
Tour operator Asian Oasis said it has contacted its lodge managers in Lanjia Lodge in Chiang Rai and Lisu Lodge in Chiang Mai, and both reported the earthquake as “very heavy and aftershocks continued for several hours after the main quakeâ€.

Asian Oasis said security measures had been taken, as guests were required to stay in the open air until the quake stopped.
“According to our managers there has been no damage to guests or properties and there will be no interruption in our daily operation,†said a spokesman for the company.
