NY, NJ and Connecticut imposing curfews, entertainment ban

Sunday, 17 Mar, 2020 0

In an unprecedented move to cut off the spread of coronavirus, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut ordered all restaurants, bars, movie theaters, gyms and casinos to close.

That means all Atlantic City casinos will shutter for an indefinite time.

Bars and restaurants across the three states will be limited to offering takeout and delivery.

In a joint announcement, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont said all gatherings exceeding 50 people are banned.

In what is being seen as an effective curfew, New Jersey is ‘strongly discouraging’ residents from non-essential travel between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The three states have coordinated their action plan to deter people moving across state lines.

"We have agreed to a common set of rules that will pertain in all of our states, so don’t even think of going to a neighboring state because there’s going to be a different set of conditions," Cuomo said.

New York has more confirmed cases of coronavirus than any state with more than 700, and six deaths so far.

New Jersey has more than 100.

In enacting the new restrictions, the three states called out the lack of direction from the federal government.

"I have called on the federal government to implement nationwide protocols but in their absence we are taking this on ourselves," Gov. Cuomo said.
