NYE events cancelled across UK amid strong winds
Outdoor New Year’s Eve events are in doubt across the country with Edinburgh’s famed Hogmanay celebrations a notable victim of the weather.
There are severe weather warnings across Scotland and Blackpool’s fireworks display is also scrapped due to high winds.
London officials are ‘closely monitoring’ the weather with 41mph gusts expected, and could still be scrapped at the last minute.
However, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan expects the sold out event to go ahead.
High tides and strong winds are expected on the North Yorkshire coastline with people warned to stay away from ‘beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads’ around Scarborough.
The south coast is also seeing gale force winds with Poole Quay’s quirky Bathtub Race cancelled.
“After the latest weather forecasts for New Year’s Day and along with advice from the Poole Quay Harbour Master it has been decreed unsafe for not only the Bathtub Race but the classic car and vintage vehicle event due to heavy rain and gale force winds,” officials said.
There are also advisories across the North of England over possible public transport cancellations today due to strong winds of up to 70mph, the Met Office said.
