Online travel firm fined USD2.6 million for ‘deceptive tactics’
New York Attorney General Letitia James slapped a hefty $2.6 million fine on travel company Fareportal for ‘deeply deceptive tactics’ in misleading consumers.
As well as the penalty, it must ‘correct its dishonest advertising, and share accurate information with customers in real time.’
The settlement also requires Fareportal to display clearly its service fees and its cancellation policy.
It relates to practices in the two years before the pandemic.
James said Fareportal displayed false messages on its site over supposedly fast selling flights and hotel rooms which she described as ‘dishonest and predatory behavior.’
This created false urgency around availability, James said
“These types of nefarious tactics are used to manipulate and trick consumers into buying goods or services.”
The company operates several travel websites including CheapOair.com and OneTravel.com.
