‘Overwhelming’ trend for short breaks
Lonely Planet is launching city break guide packs after research found 90% of its readers enjoy short breaks.
The guidebook publishers, which claims to lead the UK market on city guides, is launching new packs that contain pocket guides, maps and phrase books for 11 of its most popular short break destinations including New York, Paris, Barcelona and Prague.
The City Pack contains a pocket guidebook, phrase book and a CD-rom itinerary planner, a product that has not previously been available. This costs £8.99. For longer breaks a pack contains a more comprehensive city guide and a map, and costs £14.99. Both will be available from March 17 for about six weeks.
The launch of the packs is being supported by six-week long radio and in-store promotions offering customers the chance to win holidays.
In addition Lonely Planet is giving away 100,000 copies of a minature guidebook called “Lonely Planet’s City Break Secrets” with copies of The Guardian on March 19, and some will be available through shops.
Lonely Planet spokeswoman, Briony Grogan told TravelMole that an “overwhelming” number of its customers enjoyed shortbreaks.
A survey undertaken by the company of 20,000 customers in December 2004 found 90% took a city break in 2004, and of the total 58% took up to three breaks a year, 24% up to six and 9% more than seven short breaks in one year.
