Palma de Mallorca Airport is bracing for disruption as two separate labor disputes threaten to impact operations during one of the busiest weeks of the summer holiday season.
While Palma Airport (PMI) remains fully operational, passengers are being warned that strikes involving maintenance workers and ground handling staff could lead to delays, particularly during peak travel periods.
The first industrial action involves workers covered by the Balearic Islands Metal Sector Collective Agreement. Maintenance personnel, mechanics, electricians, and other technical staff are staging daily 24-hour strikes from July 27 through July 30.
Although the walkouts are not expected to shut down the airport, they could affect technical maintenance and a range of ancillary operational services provided by contractor companies working at PMI.
A second dispute involves Swissport, one of the airport’s largest ground handling providers.
Swissport employees have announced a series of partial strikes on July 28 and August 1, 4 and 8. Instead of all-day walkouts, staff plan to stop work during busy morning and evening operating periods, increasing the risk of delays to baggage handling, aircraft turnaround and passenger services.
The strikes come as Mallorca experiences one of its busiest tourism periods, with Palma Airport handling thousands of flights and hundreds of thousands of passengers each week during the summer holidays.
Airport officials note that many aviation services are interconnected, meaning disruption in one operational area can quickly ripple across airline schedules. Even when airport infrastructure remains fully open, shortages in maintenance or ground handling staff can delay departures and arrivals.
Travelers flying through Palma during the affected dates are advised to check flight status regularly with their airline, arrive at the airport well in advance of departure, and allow extra time for baggage drop and security procedures.
