A man has been charged with raping a fellow passenger aboard P&O Cruises’ Pacific Aria.
The 33-year old was charged with two counts of rape which allegedly took place at the weekend on the 1260-passenger cruise ship.
A spokesman for P&O Cruises’ parent company Carnival Australia said police were informed after the woman complained she had been attacked by a travelling companion.
"A cabin was sealed and, having reported the alleged assault to police, we have been assisting them fully in their inquiries," the spokesman said.
A police spokesman confirmed the attacker was known to the victim but he cannot be named for legal reasons.
He made his first appearance in court after the ship returned to Brisbane and was remanded in custody pending another court appearance later this month.
When questioned by police he allegedly said he had no recollection of the incident.
