P&O to open remote outback resort
P&O Australian Resorts is opening a luxury resort in the Australian outback for 20 guests, 186 miles west of Cairns. The company is spending £1.7 million on upgrading the Wrotham Park Station, which is currently a working cattle station. In order to create a “homestead” environment, guests will stay in ten guest quarters on the banks of the Mitchell River. The project is being undertaken as a joint venture with the Australian Agricultural Company and R.M. Williams Holdings Limited. It is expected to be completed by early September. The resort is expected to attract fans of the “great outdoors” with activities like wildlife walks, canoeing and stargazing in the 1.5 million acre site. Traditional “outback activities” like rounding up cattle will also be available. The cost is expected to be about £345 per night per person including accommodation, meals, drinks and some activities. Guests can reach the resort by taking a 40 minute flight from Cairns that touches down on an airstrip three miles from the resort. Only 20 guests can be accommodated at any time, and the resort will be open from April to December each year. A spokesperson said that the hotel was not building a spa in the interests of eco-tourism – as water is in short supply in the region. Although she said there will be a swimming pool. P&O Australian Resorts has other properties in the region, like Lizard Island, Dunk Island, Bedarra Island and Healing Waters Spa in the Daintree Rainforest.
