Politicians to continue fight against third Heathrow runway
Heathrow still has a major battle to win final approval for its proposed third runway as politicians have immediately declared they will fight the government’s decision.
Windsor and Maidenhead borough council, which lies close to the west London airport, has vowed to spend £50,000 to challenge the planned Heathrow expansion.
Some of the government’s own MPs are also opposing a third runway at Heathrow, which Zac Goldsmith, the Conservation MP for Richmond Park, described today as ‘catastrophic’.
Goldsmith had previously threatened to resign if the government backed a third runway at Heathrow and re-run as an independent.
He is expected to make an announcement later today about whether he will trigger a by-election in the London borough that lies under the Heathrow flight path.
Education Secretary Justine Greening, MP for the southwest borough of Putney, is also expected to publicly oppose the decision since PM Theresa May has given MPs the freedom to express their opinions on Heathrow rather than toe the party line.
Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said when he was London Mayor that he would lie down in front of bulldozers if Heathrow built a new runway and he indicated today that he would continue to oppose the airport’s expansion.
