Poor show for big brands in Tripadvisor hotel awards

Monday, 20 Jan, 2011 0

Big brand hotels are noticeably missing from Tripadvisor’s latest Travellers’ Choice Hotel Awards.

Instead, small and independently-owned hotels dominated the top 25 list, which was won by Rudding Park Hotel in Harrogate for the third year running.

"These awards celebrate the stars of the British hotel industry, yet global brands are conspicuously missing from the top 25 list this year," said Emma O’Boyle, TripAdvisor spokeswoman.

For the second consecutive year, London hotels are also missing from the top 25, chosen by TripAdvisor readers.’

"With the countdown on to the 2012 Olympics and only 18 months to go, it’s likely London’s hospitality industry will be working hard to make sure London performs as a world-class tourism destination next year."

O’Boyle added: "British B&Bs have performed extraordinarily well, but in terms of value there is still work to be done to convince tourists that British hotels offer good value for money."

Not a single British hotel made it into this year’s European ‘Bargain Hotels’ list, which was dominated by Eastern European hotels.
