PortMiami, cruise lines agree to implement shore power
Shore power is finally coming to the world’s cruise capital.
Miami-Dade County signed a joint statement with six cruise lines to bring shore power to PortMiami.
Current tenants Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean International, and Virgin Voyages signed an agreement with utility supplier Florida Power and Light.
Miami Mayor Daniella Levine Cava is setting up a working group to explore the options and agree a timeline for rollout of shore power which could take years to complete for all terminals.
"This is a major win for our port, the environment, the entire region, and the state of Florida, and I’m incredibly proud to deliver on my commitment to bring shore power to our community," said Mayor Levine Cava.
"We all agree that shore power is the right investment for a climate-resilient future for PortMiami, Miami-Dade County, and Florida," the cruise lines said in a joint statement.
"There are many details to be addressed, including port infrastructure investments, ship configurations, financing, and a timeline for availability of electrical power infrastructure. Today is the first crucial step to begin this process."
