Portugal back on quarantine list but Azores and Madeira spared

Tuesday, 10 Sep, 2020 0

Portugal has been removed from the government’s ever-changing travel corridor list for England, but the Azores and Madeira remain.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps also said Hungary, French Polynesia and Reunion have been removed while Sweden has received the all-clear and been added to the safe travel list.

Wales, which had already removed Portutal but retained the Azores and Madeira, followed England’s decision by removing Hungary and Reunion and adding Sweden.

Scotland took a blanket approach to Portugal last week by including the islands in its quarantine requirments.

It means travellers returning from mainland Portugal, and the other three destinations, after 4am on Saturday must isolate for 14 days. The Foreign Office also warned against all but essential.

In the now-familar series of tweets, Shapps stressed that travellers returning from any overseas country must, by law, complete a Passenger Locator Form.

The decision to keep the Azores and Madeira on the safe travel list reflects the new island corridor policy introduced earlier this week.

Shapps told Parliament it now has sufficient regional data to ditch the blanket country approach to quarantine.

But he stressed it would only apply to islands, where there are ‘natural borders’, and not to regions within the mainland of a country.

The first destinations to be singled out were the Greek islands of Lesvos, Tinos, Serifos, Mykonos, Crete, Santorini and Zakynthos. All seven were ruled out of ruled out of bounds following a spike in Covid cases and returning travellers told to quarantine for 14 days on their return.
