Positive pilot breathalyser tests in India doubled in 2022

Failed pilot breathalyser tests more than doubled in 2022.

India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation said at least 41 pilots failed alcohol testing, up from 19 cases last year.

According to its data, cabin crew failed tests almost tripled with 116 positive cases.

India’s civil aviation rules for pilot breathalyser tests are less strict than many other countries.

Pilots are taken off duty for three months for the first two offences.

The licence is only suspended on the third positive result.

Aviation safety expert Mohan Ranganathan said it should be made a criminal offence to act as a stronger deterrent.
