Pride of America resuming Big Island port calls
There is a rare piece of good news for struggling Big Island tourism businesses.
Just days after halting cruise calls ‘indefinitely,’ Norwegian Cruise Line will return to Hilo and Kona later this week.
In announcing the resumption, Norwegian said it will continue to monitor conditions.
"We have visited its ports for well over a decade and we are very happy to be returning to Hilo and Kona. Please know that the safety and security of our guests and crew remains our first priority," a statement said.
Pride of America’s weekly calls had been halted since early May due to concerns of poor air quality due to the ongoing Kilauea volcano eruption.
"We are very grateful to Norwegian Cruise Line for reinstituting its port calls in Hilo and Kona. This is especially wonderful news for the small businesses in and around those communities that service the wishes of the ship’s guests as they venture out to experience the island of Hawaii," said Hawaii Gov. David Ige.
The 2,500 passenger ship is currently on a weekly cruise schedule throughout the Hawaiian Islands based in Honolulu.
Calls to Kahului, Maui and Kauai had been unaffected by the volcanic activity.
