Protestors clash with police in Athens

Thursday, 16 December 20103 min read

Violent clashes broke out in Athens yesterday after protestors clashed with police during a general strike.

Luxury hotels and the country’s parliament buildings were targeted with petrol bombs and the police responded with tear gas.

The country was hit by yet another day of strike action – the seventh this year – that has brought flights and public transport to a halt.

The protests are over drastic actions by the Greek government to help the country get out of its financial crisis.

Outside the country’s parliament, protesters threw petrol bombs and were sprayed with tear gas by police.

According to reports, around 15,000 people are taking part in the marches.

The strike was part of a European day of action against economic reforms, which also led to strikes in Spain and Belgium.
