Qantas ramps up trans-Tasman flights for start of two-way travel bubble

Saturday, 06 Apr, 2021 0

Qantas and budget subsidiary Jetstar will restart flying to all pre-pandemic destinations in New Zealand when the two-way Trans-Tasman bubble opens later this month.

From 19 April, Qantas and Jetstar will initially start 122 return flights per week across the Tasman on 15 routes.

Qantas also plans to launch two new routes from Cairns and the Gold Coast to Auckland.

"Restarting flights to New Zealand is about more than starting to rebuild our international network, it’s about reconnecting families and friends and getting more of our people back flying again," said Qantas Domestic and International CEO, Andrew David.

"We know Australians are keen to head overseas again, so we expect strong demand for flights to New Zealand and there are many Kiwis who can’t wait for a winter escape in Australia."

Qantas’ schedule includes year-round direct flights to Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown including direct flights from Brisbane and Melbourne to Queenstown, routes which Qantas previously only operated seasonally during the ski season.

The Qantas Group has been operating less than 3% of its pre-Covid capacity on Trans-Tasman routes.

The resumption of routes just announced and new services will take that to about 83%.
