Queensland moots free Wi-Fi to boost fortunes of theme park industry

A new weapon aimed at boosting Queensland’s struggling theme park industry has been announced – free Wi-Fi.
Visiting the beleaguered Dreamworld theme park this week, Queensland Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls has urged local councils to take up his party’s proposal for a big network of Wi-Fi hotspots.
He said it would be a welcome boost for theme parks which are still feeling the effect of sluggish business following the Dreamworld tragedy last year.
Nicholls is touting a statewide $3 million plan to install Wi-Fi hotspots in 500 tourist areas.
‘Tourism plays an important role in Queensland, it’s one of the foundations of our economy, and that’s why we’re here today to support the theme parks,’Nicholls said during the visit at Dreamworld.
Dreamworld has unsurprisingly been hardest hit with visitor numbers thought to be down more than 50% compared to January 2016.
Other Gold Coast parks had also taken a hit to a lesser extent.
Nichols says there has been interest at about 300 sites for the Wi-Fi hotspots.
