Record August for London City Airport
Resilient business travel during the traditionally quiet month of August has seen record passenger numbers use London City Airport.
More than 184,000 passengers used the Docklands airport last month, a 20% rise on the same month last year and the highest level for August since it opened in 1987.
Chief executive Richard Gooding said: “Despite the challenges the aviation industry continues to face, the business traveller has been very resilient to world events. The level of travel indicates that it is very much business as normal.”
He added: “Typically, August has always been a slow month in terms of apssengers, it is the time of year when business travel normally takes a summer break. However, this year we are experiencing a growing demand for convenient air travel and we have not seen the normal slow down.”
New routes to Milan, Stockholm, Stuttgart and Newcastle have been added from the airport this year, with flights to Madrid starting in October.
The numbers come as a shortlist of six bidders emerged to buy the airport for as much as £700 million from owner Dermot Desmond who put it up for sale in May, the Daily Telegraph reported.
