Runway mishap adds to delay woes

Monday, 6 January 20143 min read

There was more delay misery for air travelers in the Northeast after JFK airport was forced to close for over an hour on Sunday after a small jet slipped off an icy runway.

FAA officials are investigating why Delta Connection Flight 4100, en route from Toronto, skidded off the tarmac onto a grassy area.

None of the 35 passengers and crew were reported injured and the aircraft was towed safely to the gate.

Port Authority police and emergency crews responded to assist passengers, and eight inbound flights were diverted to Bradley International Airport near Hartford, Connecticut during the brief shutdown, airport officials said.

The incident came two days after a major snowstorm brought travel chaos and over a half-foot of snow in parts of New York City resulting in thousands of flight cancelations throughout the Northeast.

Later in the day on Sunday, a fatal crash occurred at Aspen Airport as a private jet flipped over and burst into flames on touchdown, killing one and injuring two.
