Ryanair is ‘on the retreat’ says German airline as it closes two bases

Eurowings claims ‘ultra low cost’ airlines are on the run in Germany after announcing that it will replace 95% of Ryanair’s flights from Dusselfdorf when the Irish airline pulls out next month.

Specifically, Eurowings will increase flights to the Balearics, the Canaries, mainland Spain, Portugal, Greece and its islands from 24 October.

In total, it will offer direct flights to more than 80 destinations in Europe.

Ryanair is also pulling out of Stuttgart airport in Germany. The airline blamed the airports’ refusal to lower their fees due to the Covid-19 pandemic for its decision to close its German bases.

"Stuttgart and Dusseldorf are just the beginning – on closer inspection, the ultra low-cost business model is on the retreat throughout Germany," said Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof.

"Instead of undermining social standards and regularly offending partners and customers, we offer reliability, fairness and long-term prospects.

"In times of crisis, our customers are not looking for 5-euro tickets, but more than ever for an airline they can trust. We are pleased that we can now offer even more customers in North Rhine-Westphalia fair and attractive fares for their next flight".
