Ryanair ready to axe six routes?
Ryanair’s boss Michael O’Leary has reportedly stated that the carrier will abandon up to six routes – including at least one destination in France – because they are not performing well enough.
The carrier’s chief executive, while stopping short of naming the destinations under threat, reportedly said that the proportion of seats sold on the vulnerable routes was less than 70%. Three destinations are served from Stockholm’s Skavska airport; the other three are in France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
According to The Independnt, O’Leary was “unrepentant” that the carrier’s proposed actions could leave British holiday-home owners in the lurch. He is reported as saying: “Please don’t ask me to feel sorry for rich people who have second homes in France. We do not have an obligation to go on carrying them to their destinations for ever and a day. If routes don’t work we will not hang around.”
O’Leary, speaking as he revealed a pre-tax profit of GBP127million for the six months to September, predicted that yields would keep falling for the airline, but that profits would continue to grow because of increased margins.
