Ryanair to launch inflight entertainment
Ryanair has reportedly bought 6,000 “digeplayers” – and is hailing the in-flight entertainment system as “the next big thing in revolution in low-cost air travel”.
According to The Independent newspaper, the digeplayer is a portable, battery-powered entertainment system that can store films, cartoons and the like on a hard disk – but is only the size of a hardback book and weighs just two pounds.
The newspaper reports that the carrier will start trialling them in November and is planning to introduce them across the network next spring.
Passengers will have to pay to use the digeboxes – at an introductory rate of GBP5 per flight – and will have to give staff a passport or driving licence in return, to avoid them “forgetting” to give the digeplayer back at the end of a flight.
The device was reportedly invented by a design engineer for Alaska Airlines. Ryanair says it will break even by renting just five digeplayers per flight.
