SCVB Joins Hall of Fame with Latest Award
The Sydney Convention and Visitors Bureau has been named Australia’s top conference and tourism organisation for the third year in a row, winning Hall of Fame status in the Meetings & Events Australia (MEA) awards for 2006.
The award was announced before industry leaders at a gala dinner in Hobart last week, where hundreds of delegates from around the country gathered for the annual MEA National Conference, with SCVB Managing Director Jon Hutchison saying, “The SCVB achieved a record annual result during 2005-06, so we’re delighted to have been recognised for a year in which Sydney performed so well.”
He added, “This award covers a period in which the SCVB secured more business for Sydney than ever before – more than $373 million worth of conferences and other business events,” adding “We also achieved a 72% success rate in bidding for international events, securing 42 bids that will bring an additional 250,000 delegates to Australia in coming years.”
In its submission to the MEA awards, the SCVB highlighted its achievements for 2006 including its successful bid for the $63 million Rotary International Convention for 22,000 delegates in 2014, detailing its role in helping to secure the 2008 World Youth Day for Sydney, an event expected to attract 200,000 people and generate almost $200 million for NSW and Sydney’s elevation in the International Conference and Convention Association (ICCA) rankings to become one of the world’s top 20 convention cities.
Mr Hutchison also congratulated SCVB members who won MEA awards – Sydney Showground (Catering/Banqueting), Tour Hosts (Meetings Management eight delegates or fewer), Great Southern Events (Special Event Organiser) and Event Planners Australia (Meeting of the Year, fewer than 500 delegates).
