Singapore’s Civil Aviation Authority has begun an investigation into the fire which engulfed a wing on a Singapore Airlines jet at Changi Airport
CAAS’s Air Accident Investigation Bureau will ‘get to the bottom of the matter," Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said.
However officials hinted it could be weeks before the cause of the fire is officially announced.
Flight SQ368, en route to Milan, returned to Changi after an oil leak indicator warning.
After landing safety at Changi Airport it suddenly caught fire.
The 222 passengers remained on board while fire crews put the blaze out within about five minutes.
The aircraft’s right GE Aviation GE90-115B engine caught fire and GE technicians were dispatched to the airport to assist with the investigation, GE spokesman Rick Kennedy said.
"GE continually monitors and analyzes the more than 2,000 GE90-115B engines in airline service and we are not aware of any issues that would hazard the safe flight of aircraft powered by this engine."
The runway remained closed for five hours following the fire but all other flights took off within one hour of scheduled departure, CAAS said.
