Skiers warned of selfie dangers

Half of skiers have been injured trying to photograph or film themselves on the slopes, according to travel insurance specialist Columbus Direct.

The survey of 2,000 Brits, undertaken by Opinium in November, found 28% required medical treatment as a result.

The insurance firm said experienced skiers and snowboarders, who ski on black runs or go off piste, risk serious injury trying to obtain the best selfie or GoPro footage of themselves in action.

Nearly three quarters (72%) of these skiers and snowboarders admit to filming or photographing themselves in action.

They also spend an average of £743 on gadgets such as Go-Pros and GPS trackers when they go on their winter break.

Rob Thomas, head of brand at Columbus Direct, said: "While it’s fun and thrilling to capture yourself in action with the latest gadgets on the slopes, sport enthusiasts should always prioritise their own safety above all else in order to enjoy an incident free, winter sports holiday."

Chemmy Alcott, four-time British Winter Olympian, advised skiers to make sure they are always visible to other skiers coming down the slope, stop somewhere safe, and don’t try to retrieve dropped equipment if it’s unsafe.

"The range of technological equipment you can take to the slopes now is incredible and it’s fantastic to be able to record your experience, but it’s important to remember to take care and put your safety ahead of the selfie!" he said.
