Snow season kicks off early in New Zealand
YEAH …… IT’S BEEN SNOWING!
Yep, the snow has well and truly arrived in New Zealand with snow blanketing the fields around Queenstown and Wanaka today. Meanwhile the North Island ski area of Mt Ruapehu received an earlier fall around Easter weekend.
Queenstown
Pre-season ski resort crews at The Remarkables and Coronet Peak struggled to contain their excitement when they arrived at work today. There was 40 cm of fresh snow awaiting them at The Remarkables Ski Area and 20cm at Coronet Peak.
“We didn’t see snow like this until a month later last year, so predictions for an early winter seem to be right. The longer term forecast indicates we’ll hang onto this new snow and see more pretty soon – roll on opening day on June 24th” says The Remarkables Ski Area Manager, Hamish McCrostie.
Wanaka
It was a similar story nearby in Wanaka. When blizzard conditions cleared at Cardrona, 15 centimetres of snow had settled on the field.
According to locals in Wanaka, while snow hasn’t quite fallen on the ground, it is certainly pretty chilly in the resort town. Chains are required to be carried on the Crowne Range Road (connecting Wanaka and Queenstown).
Easter Falls in the North Island
Snow coated the two ski resorts on Mt Ruapehu, Turoa and Whakapapa over Easter. Chairlifts were running for sightseeing and visitors had the chance to play in the first snow of 2006.
