Authorities in Sri Lanka said they will boost tourist police numbers at several popular natural attractions after a recent spate of harassment and violence targeting foreign tourists.
Inspector General Pujith Jayasundera Daud said about 20 new police posts will be established and patrols increased at scenic spots.
There will be extra patrols in main tourist centres as well, he said.
A Dutch tourist was sexually harassed recently and two separate groups of tourists were attacked near the resort town of Mirissa a few days apart.
Local media reported 14 individuals were arrested over the two incidents.
"I wish we had more men and resources for this job, but we are making adjustments to our deployments to ensure better productivity," Jayasundara said.
Tourism minister John Amaratunga appealed for tourists to come forward and report crimes and warned female travellers to exercise caution when out after dark.
At a press conference, Amaratunga apologised directly to the Dutch tourist and promised action.
"We are sorry about what happened and apologize for the harassment. We guarantee absolute safety in future for tourists, with the support of the police."
He said a visible police presence us essential on and near beaches to avoid further harassment and act as a deterrent.
