Summer vacation travel on the rise
More Americans are ready to hit the beach this summer and will spend more this year, according to the results of an annual survey by travel insurance firm Allianz Global Assistance USA.
It says 52% of US customers will take a summer vacation, up 5% from the 2013 survey and will typically spend $1,894 on family vacations compared to $1,755 last year.
This equates to a combined $100 billion spend on travel in 2014.
The survey said travelers between 35 to 54 will spend the most on vacations at an average $2,359, and those aged 18 to 34 the least at $1,411.
"Summer travel has rebounded strongly, and that’s good news for the travel industry," said Allianz CEO Mike Nelson.
"While Americans are eager to experience new places and cultures, they are also savvy enough to protect their vacation with travel insurance," Nelson said.
The Vacation Confidence Index polled 1,000 randomly selected customers by telephone and assessed respondents’ intention to take a summer vacation this year and spending habits.
The poll also found that 39% of Americans had not had a vacation for two years, a drop of 2% compared to last year.
