Survey reveals 28% of travellers do not support Burma tourism boycott
A survey of 500 travellers by responsibletravel.com has revealed that 28% think it is ethical to travel to Burmar (Myanmar).
A tourist boycott of Burma, backed by Tony Blair, is part of broader sanctions designed to cripple the ruling military junta and return Burma to democratic rule.
Burma is the only country for which responsibletravel.com has a ‘no go’ policy.
But the Free Burma coalition, long-time supporters of the boycott, says sanctions are not working.
It says the gap left by the West’s withdrawal is simply being filled by Asian investors.
Justin Francis , co-founder of responsibletravel.com, said: “This was once a cut and dried issue so we were surprised to find that as many as 28% from our survey of responsible travellers believe it is ethical to travel to Burma . Despite this we will continue with our policy of not marketing holidays to Burma.”
