Sydney beach outlaws smoking
One of Sydney’s most famous beaches has declared itself a no-smoking zone, and many others in the city could follow suit.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Manly Council, home to world-famous Manly Beach, decided to ban smoking on its beaches, making it the first place in the world outside of Los Angeles to do so.
Now Waverley Council, in the city’s southern suburbs, is reportedly investigating the legal implications of smoking bans on the famous surf beaches of Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama – and possibly extending any such ban to its parks and children’s play areas.
The Clean Up Australia organisation reportedly stated that some 32 million cigarette butts are discarded each year in Australia, with some 700,000 at any one time littering Bondi Beach.
Peter Moscatt, mayor of Waverley, is quoted as saying: “Cigarette butts are a significant pollutant that can harm wildlife and damage coastal environments. There have been reports of cigarette filters being found in the stomachs of whales, fish and birds that mistake them for food.”
