Sydney’s Martin Place goes French on Wednesday – launch of Dreamquest 2006
Twenty classic Citroen Traction Avant cars, built between 1934 and 1957 and shipped from France especially for the occasion, will commence their Dreamquest 2006 trans-Australia trek from Sydney to Darwin from Sydney’s Martin Place on Wednesday 26 July at 8:00am.
The former GPO in Martin Place, the location from which all distances are measured in Australia is a fitting location for this mammoth trek to commence.
The 45 crew members have been preparing themselves and their vehicles for some time for one of the world’s toughest journeys, with the cars only arriving by ship in Sydney last week.
The participants will drive 7000km in 28 days, arriving in Darwin on August 18, 2006 to a fanfare and parade to celebrate the conclusion of the trek, having visited the Hunter Valley, Tamworth, Lightning Ridge, Bourke, Tiboburra, Arkaroola, Maree, Coober Pedy, Erldunda, Uluru, Kings Canyon, Alice Springs, Tilmouth Well, Rabbit Flat, Halls Creek, Wave Hill, Katherine, Jabiru and Kakadu.
Martin Place will take on a “gallic” flavour for the morning with the French classic cars and their drivers being launched and flagged off by the Consul General of France in Sydney, M. Laurent Delahousse, The Hon Tim Fischer, Chair of Tourism Australia and City of Sydney officials.
Descendance will also provide a Welcome to Aboriginal Australia and a Blessing of the Dreamquest 2006 cars on the trek though Australia.
Sponsors and supporters of this classic event include, Tourism Australia, Maison de la France, The City of Sydney, Toby’s Estate, Butler’s Hire, French Rendezvous, Qantas, France Telecom and Australie Tours and their partner company in Australia, Pacific Spirit
