Thai SkyDiving Royal Celebration Record
Skydivers from thirty-one countries recently claimed a world record of 400 people holding hands in a mid-air free-fall formation in Thailand as part of the celebration of the King of Thailand’s accession to the throne 60 years ago.
The World Team ’06, an informal association of international skydivers who made the attempt over an airfield in northeastern Thailand were observed by judges from the Switzerland-based Federation Aeronautique Internationale and they certifies the jump as new world record.
The complexity of the jump is demonstrated by the group failing in two earlier jumps Wednesday to completely link up for a measurable amount of time and that they had made three failed attempts on Monday and again on Tuesday.
The World Team also held the previous record of 357 skydivers which took place over the Takhli Air Force Base, Thailand in February 2004.
The attempts at the record this year were organized in honour of Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, who is celebrating 60 years on the throne this year.
The Royal Thai Air Force provided five C-130 Hercules aircraft to carry the divers, who jumped out of the rear cargo doors at 7,315 metres, after which they first appeared as specks in the sky, but soon they grasped hands and drifted down as a circular formation for 4.25 seconds, as evidenced by this photo.
