The Holy Land goes digital
A series of new technology initiatives brings The Holy Land to your front door—or rather, to your phone or computer.
An initiative of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, the iKotel application allows travelers to view live webcams of Jerusalem’s Western Wall, or Kotel, a wall of the ancient Temple that still stands.
The iKotel app also offers virtual tours of the Western Wall Tunnels under the Old City of Jerusalem and tour options, as well as a "Mizrach Compass" that shows travelers the direction to Jerusalem from anywhere in the world.
Travelers to the Old City of Jerusalem also can tour other historical, religious and cultural sites with new self-guided digital JerusaleMP3 walking tours.
The digital tours come complete with maps and written explanations of the sights and sites of the Old City, including the Jewish Quarter, Via Dolorosa and Temple Mount.
The multimedia audio tours also feature video and can be operated from a smartphone or similar audio device.
They are free for download at http://www.jerusalemp3.com.
There’s also a new Visit TLV Tourism app that features images and descriptions of the most popular attractions in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, including the city’s best beaches, museums, city tours, restaurants, bars, cultural attractions and hotels.
The app also includes up-to-date listings of events taking place throughout the city, including street parties, concerts and exhibitions.
The Tour Haifa app, meanwhile, offers up-to-date information on top tourism attractions and cultural events taking place in Israel’s northern port city of Haifa, including art exhibitions, museum openings and cultural events, and a selection of recommended restaurants, cafes and bars.
