Thousands line Liverpool waterfront for Queen Anne naming ceremony
Cunard named its spiritual home as Godparent of newest ship Queen Anne and celebrated its Liverpudlian pride.
It celebrated its long bond with the City of Liverpool, alongside five Liverpool icons.
Cunard President, Katie McAlister, and Captain Inger Klein Thorhauge were joined by Spice Girl Melanie C, broadcaster and community leader Ngunan Adamu, restaurant entrepreneur Natalie Haywood, Liverpool music pioneer Jayne Casey, and heptathlon athlete Katarina Johnson-Thomson.
Liverpool was the birthplace of Cunard with its first transatlantic crossing departing 184 years ago and the company’s headquarters for 128 years.
The event was watched by thousands at Pier Head.
Queen Anne is the 249th ship to carry the Cunard name.
Katie McAlister, President of Cunard, said: “This is testament to the enduring relationship that connects Cunard and the city. We are equally delighted to have our five chosen Liverpool icons represent the city in the ceremony.”
The ceremony was closed out by Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli performing with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
