Thousands of fake Covid vaccination certificates have been sold online
Hundreds of scammers are hawking fake vaccination certificates on the web. According to AI-powered retail scam tracking firm Fakespot, bogus documents started appearing on Shopify sites in January and the problem has gotten worse. Many scammers are advertising on Facebook and elsewhere.
Fakespot estimates thousands of false vaccination records have been sold over the past three months. The paper certificates are relatively low-tech and are easy to duplicate, Fakespot says.
It cited one Shopify merchant selling a pack of four blank vaccination cards for $80.
The National Association of Attorneys General last week called on platforms like Twitter, Ebay and Shopify to do more to stop fake CDC vaccine cards being advertised for sale.
