Tim Fischer urges calm
Tourism Australia Chairman Tim Fischer said the riots on Sydney’s beaches would not deter tourists from coming to Australia, despite the reports of overseas countries warning travellers to be careful.
“The airlines are saying no impact to report at this stage and we stand ready with a very big approach to 2006 to really shore up international tourism coming to this country,” Mr Fischer told the Nine Network.
“Look, I will be taking my family to Sydney beaches after Christmas,” he said. “I was there yesterday.”
“Had you not interrupted me this morning I would like to have had a breakfast swim with Bruce (Baird) at Cronulla, Peter Garrett at Maroubra, with Malcolm Turnbull possibly even with Bronwyn Bishop at Narrabeen. But that would have been a tough call.”
“I don’t like what happened 10 days ago but the authorities will deal with violent crime and they will deal with it even better if the police get the support they deserve.”
“Any powder puff processing or sentencing by magistrates or judges who do work hard, that will be very badly received by the community.”
Mr Fischer said Tourism Australia was planning several campaigns, particularly the much-hyped G’day LA push in the US along with other campaigns in continental Europe and the UK.
