Dear TravelMole Member
In his opening address at ABTA’s convention in Lisbon on Friday,
ABTA President Steven Bath said: “The changes we have seen in
the last 7 weeks have been the most profound in the history of
air travel”.
As the convention drew to a close yesterday, the feeling at the
convention was that there have been some early signs of a small
recovery. Research commissioned by ABTA indicates that
outbound travel from the UK next year is likely to be down by
5% but that since pre-September 11th forecasts were predicting
a 4-5% growth, there will essentially be a flat market in 2002.
This of course is based on the assumption that no major further
negative impacts from terrorism will occur. For more information:

1. ABTA: The travel industry is ‘Down, but not out’
At its annual convention in Lisbon, ABTA has revealed the results
of its commissioned research on the short, medium and long
term effects of the attacks of 11 September on the travel
industry.

British Airways passenger numbers fell by almost a quarter
(24.7%) in October compared to the same month last year, the
airline’s latest set of traffic and capacity statistics show.

Low cost airline Ryanair, which revealed a sharp increase in
profits today, has criticised European flagcarrier airlines
for “sticking out the begging bowl” following September’s
terrorist attacks in the US.

Middle East airline Emirates ordered 58 aircraft worth a total
