Tourism NSW wins public relations award for centenary promotion

NSW Minister for Tourism and Sport and Recreation congratulated Tourism NSW on winning a Gold Award on Wednesday night from the NSW Public Relations Institute of Australia for its ‘100 Years of Tourism in New South Wales’ promotion.

Ms Nori said the award was well deserved for what was an exceptionally well-produced celebration of 100 years of tourism promotion in NSW.

“This promotion celebrated the substantial growth of the State’s tourism industry – from its humble beginnings at the turn of the last century to its position as a significant earner today,” she said.

The judges said Tourism NSW had presented “an outstanding campaign based on comprehensive historical and current research, providing clear definition of the target publics – including internal audiences. It was beautifully executed with highly professional materials design and production values.”

The win follows on from Tourism NSW’s Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Gold Award earlier this year for its 2005 Winter in Sydney campaign.

In May 1905, the then Premier of NSW, Sir Joseph Carruthers, announced the establishment of a Tourist Bureau as part of a new Department of Intelligence.

“Since then, the industry has grown from a mere 5,200 short-term overseas visitors in 1905 to welcoming some 2.7 million international visitors each year. Today it is worth $23 billion a year and employs one in 12 people,” Ms Nori said.
