Tourists face fines for drinking on streets of Majorca from next month

Happy hours will be banned and tourists fined for drinking in the streets of Majorca in a crack down on anti-social behaviour that comes into effect next month.

From April 1 to September 30, tourists face penalties of up to €3,000 if caught drinking alcohol or eating in the street.

Bars will be fined for offering happy hour deals and displaying alcoholic drinks. Police will be able to carry out checks.

The new measures follow an international summit to crack down on raucous holidaymakers, which took place on Majorca last month.

The behaviour of drunken Brits, including violence, balcony falls and the extra strain on emergency services and A&E units, were among the summit’s central topics.

Zones of ‘special tourism interest’ have been marked out where booze police will ‘control drinking and behaviour’ throughout the summer season, according to the Daily Star.

On Playa de Palma’s main strip, Schinkenstrasse, there will be physical barriers put up to stop revellers spilling out of beer gardens and onto the streets. Authorities say the move will also prevent illegal sellers and pickpockets getting in to establishments.

Public safety councillor Angelica Pastor said: "This agreement, approved by the Governing Board, will be published in the Official Bulletin of the Balearic Islands and will come into force as of April 1, with a duration of six months, to be effective for the summer campaign."
