Tourists urged to stay away as huge fire edges toward Lake Tahoe
With the massive Caldor fire threatening Lake Tahoe, evacuation notices were issued for residents and tourists were urged to stay away.
The wildfire on the California-Nevada border has scorched more than 139,000 acres of land including destroying the town of Grizzly Flats.
Only about 12% of it is under control Cal Fire said.
It is blazing a trail toward the popular vacation spot of Lake Tahoe with about 3,000 firefighters fighting the blaze.
By early Friday the fire was just 15 miles away.
Fire officials issued evacuation notices to the Twin Bridges and Echo Summit areas while Christmas Valley is under an evacuation warning.
Tourists should ‘postpone any immediate travel plans to the area until further notice,’ the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority said.
"This is the week before Labor Day weekend — a busy weekend, normally. That is not going to be the case this year," said South Lake Tahoe City Manager Joe Irvin.
The region has been enveloped by a thick yellow haze and ash.
There are still more than a dozen fires raging across California including the Dixie Fire which has destroyed hundreds of homes.
