Trainline data shows rail savings

Wednesday, 4 March 20093 min read

The Trainline claims it is helping rail customers beat so-called ‘trainflation’.

It said its latest data reveals its customers are paying only 1% more on their tickets this year compared to 2008, despite above-inflation regulated fare rises of 5%-6% in January.

It said the average price of a ticket brought through thetrainline.com in January 2009 was £29.96 compared to £29.65 paid in the same month last year.

Its research shows that, in the case of seven of its most popular routes, the average price paid online has actually fallen in the last four years.

Commercial director Ben Pearson said: “Our customers are regularly beating what we call ‘trainflation’ with prices only marginally higher now than a year ago.

“In addition, by booking in advance online our customers regularly save up to 39% on the best fare available from the station on the day of travel.”
