Travel job market sinks but worst could be over, new data finds

Saturday, 14 Dec, 2020 0

People working in travel who lost their jobs during the Covid crisis have stood next to no chance of finding work in the industry, such has been the dearth of available roles, according to new data.

Research by C&M Recruitment has revealed vacancies in the industry collapsed 94% between April and November.

While the figures will come as little surprise, the data again spells out the turmoil that has engulfed the industry.

Salaries have been less impacted.

The average travel salary remained steady at £28,504 compared to the April to November period in 2019, a marginal rise of 0.19%, with the standard travel salary falling 2.78% to £24,368.

But C&M Recruitment said the worst could be over, with vacancies between September and November showing twice the number between April and June.

Despite the number of job losses, the job agency also reported a 53% decline in the number of new candidates searching for roles.

There were wildly contrasting months however, with the number of job seekers in April falling 75%, but only by 11% in July.

Recruitment experts believe the lack of candidates can be partly explained by job seekers viewing travel as an unstable industry given the Covid pandemic.

C&M Recruitment director Barbara Kolosinska said: "We’ve experienced several global events in recent decades, but there truly has never been a more devasting few months for our industry than those that we have witnessed this year.

"With a 94 per cent reduction in travel vacancies since April, it has been an extremely testing time for us all, with some great talent having no choice but to leave the industry due to the lack of available positions.

"Thankfully, things appear to be improving and there are many reasons to feel increasingly positive. As well as the vaccine being rolled out, we are seeing incredibly encouraging figures from the first two weeks of December, suggesting this may become C&M’s busiest month since the pandemic began.

"A substantial recovery for travel recruitment will, of course, take some time, but it does look like we will be ending the year on a somewhat positive note."
