Tuesday markets see airline and online shares power ahead

It was a positive day all round for travel industry shares on a day that saw mixed fortunes for the main indices on London’s equity markets. The FTSE 100 index fell by 0.5 per cent of its value, falling 21.3 points to 4250.8, while the broader-based FTSE 250 did much better, gaining 0.8 per cent and closing at 5577.1, up 43.7 points. Dealers were very busy, with some 2.9 billion shares bought and sold on the day.

Among the airlines, British Airways added 9.75p to close at 189.25p, EasyJet put on 6.5p to close at 249p, and Ryanair managed to add 10p for a 441.5p finish. Online retailers also did well; ebookers gaining 6.5p to close at 581.5p while lastminute.com put on 1.5p to end the day at 265p. First Choice Holidays slipped a quarter of a penny to 114.75p, while MyTravel was static at 27.5p.
